Pokémon Go will include social updates and in-person raids:  Niantic has announced that new social features for Pokémon Go will release and enhancements for in-person raids. The new social elements are based on Niantic’s social App experience, which it has been testing with Ingress Agents.

The test has been ongoing for a few months, and the software is now only available to the Ingress Community in closed beta.
