Dave Chappelle called a fan while performing at his old high school.

Dave Chappelle made an appearance at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts in DC on Tuesday. There were 580 students who filled the auditorium. The comedian graduated from school in 1991.

With a camera crew in tow, Chappelle took the stage to a raucous reception of cheers and some boos. Political reports that the hour-long session went south from there. During a question and answer session, a student stepped up to the microphone and called Chappelle a “bigot.”

The teenager was apparently referring to the backlash Chappelle faced. The closer, his latest Netflix special. It included comments that were widely considered transphobic. The students didn’t hold back as they responded to the comedian.

The comedian responded to the student’s comments, which were confirmed by his spokesperson, with an unapologetic tone. “My friend, with all due respect, I don’t think you can make one of the decisions that I have to make on any given day,” he said. That statement upset some students who were expecting an apology from Chappelle.

Some of the students supported Chappelle but felt that they had not been given the opportunity to express their views. Several students approached the principal later and were disappointed that they were unable to express their support for Chappelle.

Another student reportedly told Chappelle that his “comedy kills.” Chappelle allegedly responded with “N *** as are killed every day.” A student had left during the event. Such an unexpected and bitter reception from the students made his visit a complete disaster, but he made the most of it.
